UKPN achieves 99.9 percent reliability with the help of VisNet automated distribution network monitoring

24th April 2025: UK Power Networks (UKPN), the UK’s largest electricity distribution network operator (DNO), achieved 99.9 percent reliability across its networks throughout 2024.

The impressive reliability achieved by UKPN is partly due to the installation of close to 6,000 VisNet Monitoring devices.

The award-winning VisNet Hub plays a key role in fault detection and balancing network-wide energy demand. It was one of several initiatives implemented by UKPN in 2024 to enhance network reliability and efficiency.

These measures significantly contributed to the network’s industry-leading performance in 2024, ensuring that over 19 million people received electricity more safely, securely and reliably.

UKPN’s customer-centric approach is central to its business strategy. It helped the DNO maintain a customer satisfaction score of over 94%, earning it the top spot in Ofcom’s ranking for customer satisfaction.

Thanks to the ALVIN Reclose2 solution, UKPN avoided unnecessary substation visits on more than 2,000 occasions in 2024. This not only saved over £3 million in penalties but also prevented nearly 6,500kg of CO2e from being released into the atmosphere.

Commenting on the news, Luca Grella, Head of Innovation at UKPN, said, “UK Power Networks is committed to ensuring the highest levels of reliability and efficiency for the millions of people who depend on us for their electricity. The integration of advanced technologies like VisNet Monitoring devices, ALVIN Reclose2 sets, and other cutting-edge solutions has been key to our success. These innovations not only enhance the performance of our network but also help us reduce our environmental impact and deliver better value to our customers.
Luca Grella, Head of Innovation at UKPN
Dave A. Roberts, Managing Director at VisNet Monitoring, said: “Automation of the UK’s energy networks is vital if we’re to maintain energy security and reliability across the country. “With the UK’s energy consumption set to treble by 2050, the number of low voltage grid connections is going to increase by the same amount, creating more potential points of failure on energy infrastructure nationwide. “The ability to quickly identify and resolve issues remotely within distribution networks is more important than ever, and monitoring solutions like the VisNet Hub and ALVIN Reclose2 are already playing a pivotal role in making sure the country’s energy grid remains operational.”
Dave A. Roberts, Managing Director at VisNet Monitoring

VisNet Monitoring’s technology allows owners and operators of the electrical network to monitor and manage their low voltage infrastructure, reducing the time spent by engineers to address minor faults at substations.
