Gold-plating is out, network resilience is in – and it’s urgently required

While the phrase “gold-plating” may have echoed in the past, today’s networks demand smarter, future-focused investments to withstand rising threats and support our evolving energy landscape.

As extreme weather events increase, the pressure on Australia’s vast electricity network—spanning over 1 million kilometres, with 73% above ground—continues to grow. Serving more than 13 million customers, modernising and maintaining this complex system is no small task.

In 2024 alone:

27% of customers with rooftop solar exported energy back to the grid
72,500 residential batteries installed
1 in 10 vehicles sold were EVs

With improved visibility at the grid-edge, DNSPs can better manage these dynamic loads, reduce operational risks, and maintain grid stability in an increasingly decentralised energy system.

Australia’s networks must adapt—and this starts from embracing smart monitoring, automation, and flexibility across metropolitan, regional, and rural zones.
